FAQs

Why should we join the Cub Scouts?

Our kids are impacted every day with all types of situations.  By involving them in Cub Scouts you and the Cub Scout family have the opportunity to teach and model the behaviors we want our kids to grow up with.  Cub Scouting works to instill these 12 Core Values.

  • Citizenship: Contributing service and showing responsibility to local, state, and national communities.

  • Compassion: Being kind and considerate, and showing concern for the well-being of others.

  • Cooperation: Being helpful and working together with others toward a common goal

  • Courage: Being brave and doing what is right regardless of our fears, the difficulties, or the consequences.

  • Faith: Having inner strength and confidence based on our trust in God.

  • Health and Fitness: Being personally committed to keeping our minds and bodies clean and fit.

  • Honesty: Telling the truth and being worthy of trust.

  • Perseverance: Sticking with something and not giving up, even if it is difficult.

  • Positive Attitude: Being cheerful and setting our minds to look for and find the best in all situations.

  • Resourcefulness: Using human and other resources to their fullest.

  • Respect: Showing regard for the worth of something or someone.

  • Responsibility: Fulfilling our duty to God, country, other people, and ourselves

What is the Pack Committee?

The Pack Committee is a group of parents whose children are in the pack that works to organize the events and business of the pack.  From recruitment and marketing to fundraising and outings there are volunteers who help with the logistics to make every part of the program successful.  If you have a talent or a suggestion to offer talk to those on the committee and get involved.  Your input makes it better for all!

How do you learn to be a Den Leader or Pack Leader?
There is training available for all volunteers through Boy Scouts of America (BSA).  Also, every leader must complete a "Youth Protection Course" that can be completed online (MyScouting.org) in approx 30 minutes.

When can we start participating with the Pack?
NOW!! You just need to sign up by contacting our Membership Chair or the Pack Committee Chair who can walk you through the SIMPLE process. You will be asked to fill out the application form and write a check for the annual membership (discussed above) and that's it. Once the application is complete, we will put you in touch with the appropriate Den Leader and he/she will welcome you in from there. The sooner you start the more fun you will have. It’s up to you!

No the kids are not perfect – kids aren’t!  But it takes a village and this village is working hard to raise healthy members of this community!

Are Cub Scouts the same as Boy Scouts?

Cub Scouting is a family-oriented program designed specifically to address the needs of younger kids.  Cub Scouting is a program of the Boy Scouts of America—so in that sense, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are both members of the same organization.

What are the groups that scouts meet as?

Lions - Kindergarten

Tiger Den – 1st Grade
Wolf Den – 2nd Grade
Bear Den – 3rd Grade
Webelos 1 – 4th Grade
Webelos 2 – 5th Grade

How often do Cub Scouts meet?

Cub Scouts meet in their dens once each week or every two weeks, and a pack meeting is held for all Cub Scouts and their families once a month. Beyond that, it depends on the den and pack: a den may hold a special activity, such as a service project or visit to a local museum in place of one of the weekly meetings or in addition to the weekly meetings. Likewise, a pack may conduct a special event such as a campout as an additional event, or as a substitute for its monthly pack meeting.

May parents attend den meetings?

Cub Scouting is open to parents at all times. Den meetings are intended to be an activity for the individual boys and your den leader will be working hard to keep the Cub Scouts focused. If you would like to be present at a den meeting, ask the den leader in advance so that the leader can plan a way for you to observe or participate.

How much does it cost per year to be in the Cub Scouts?

The initial registration fee to join our Pack is $60.00 per year [$10.00 goes to BSA for insurance, and $50.00 stays within our Pack to fund the activities that we do, along with achievements and awards]. Our membership year begins in June and ends in May. We offer programming throughout the whole year.  We try to keep our costs low, so most of our Pack activities are funded by money raised by the Scouts (selling Popcorn, Touch a Truck, etc.).

Do you have sponsors?

Yes we are officially chartered by the Tabernacle Rescue Squad 439.  This is not a monetary sponsorship but a chartering sponsorship that gives us the rights to be a Cub Scout Pack as required by the Boy Scouts of America.

What kind of uniform do we need?
For new Tiger Scouts (1st graders): You will need a Blue Cub Scout shirt and belt, patches and hat; the pack provides the neckerchief and slide. When you sign up ask about our uniform exchange items. The Rowan Scout Resource Center Scout Store is our local store for cub scout needs or if you’re online savvy, EBay is a good source, as well. For Wolfs, Bears, and Webelos: You will need a more complete uniform…blue scout shirt and belt, along with blue pants or shorts.

What kind of manuals or materials do we need?
Each year your scout will need the basic Handbook for the appropriate level of scouting (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, or Webelos). All of these materials are available at the Rowan Scout Resource Center (693 Rancocas Road - Westampton). This book will guide you and your scout through all the requirements for the upcoming year. Your Den Leader and Pack Master will schedule the different activities to support the advancement of the cubscouts.

How much time is involved every month to be a part of scouting?
The Pack meets once a month on a Wednesday night, between September and June and our meetings are generally one hour in length. Each Den also meets and decides how often to meet every month as determined by the Den Leader and families. The Pack suggests Dens meet twice a month for about 1 hour, but this is up to each Den to decide. There will be additional events that we encourage everyone to participate in as well including community service, family campouts, parades, hikes, flag placement ceremony, etc…

Is Scouting only for my son and his dad?
No. Cub Scouts is for the boys and girls, but they can have anyone as an adult partner (dad, mom, grandparent, aunt/uncle, etc). At the Cub Scout level, also family participation is encouraged at Pack events, camping, hiking or anything else that might get planned. Moms and/or Dads both are very active as adult partners in our Pack.

Do I HAVE to volunteer to be a Leader?
No. But, our pack is run by all volunteers. The Pack Committee, Cub Master, and Den Leaders all volunteer their time and talents to make this activity a great one for our kids.  You will be asked to volunteer within the Pack at some level as our children’s experience depends on each of us helping where and when we can. Ask your Den Leader or a Pack Committee member at a pack event (generally adults found in uniform) how you can assist.
